October Book Club Pick: "The Body Keeps the Score"

by Kristine Fredheim on October 14, 2021

Oh boy, oh man am I excited for this month's book pick!

Raise your hand if you've ever felt traumatized! All of you, ok! You're going to want to pick up this fantastic book about how you can heal from trauma and PTSD by understanding the brain, the body and what is the most efficient way to heal. Also, why drugs WON'T help in the big picture.

Now, I’m not going all Tom Cruise on you guys by telling you to quit your meds - but this book will give you a lot of valuable information on the very successful treatments there are out there! Many of them, you can do on your own. I'll share some of them below!

“As I often tell my students, the two most important phrases in therapy, as in yoga, are 'Notice that' and 'What happens next?' Once you start approaching your body with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts.”

Bessel A. van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

While I always knew Yoga is good for you, it even helps you heal deep-rooted trauma, which is amazing to me! To lovingly move your body, also in synchronicity with others, is so healing! When we're born, we mimic our parents to stay safe. We're so connected with our parents, and if we haven't felt or been safe, this causes trauma. Re-learning safe synchronized movements such as dancing with someone, joining a yoga class, singing together - you're basically re-parenting yourself and learning that you are SAFE.

If you need support, book me for a yin yoga class here, where we'll lovingly and safely move our bodies in sync, while focusing on breath and our intention for the class!

That said, enjoy this wonderful read (get it here)! I hope it will change your life like it has for me. I also urge you to follow Kristine's Book Club on Instagram for more content and essential tips.
